Wednesday, October 12

Happy Wednesday! It’s been kind of a weird Wednesday because of the national holiday here in Spain. We didn’t have class because we were celebrating the country of Spain/Columbus’ discovery of America/the patron virgin of Spain. It’s a slightly holiday, but much appreciated nonetheless. Corinne and I both enjoyed sleeping in this morning, and we had a lazy morning. We slowly ate lunch and I wrote a quick composition about an embarrassing story for my grammar class. I know it’s probably shocking, but I had the hardest time thinking of something good to write about. I know that embarrassing moments pop up like weeds in my life, but for some reason when I’m put on the spot I can never think of one. I ended up writing about falling in the middle of my host family’s house last semester and living with them repeating the incident every day for the rest of the semester. Not exactly the most entertaining, but it fulfilled the one-page requirement.
After I wrote my paper, I headed to another part of Triana (the neighborhood all of us SIS students live in) to meet some classmates for coffee. Unfortunately, Corinne and her fabulous sense of direction didn’t come with me, so I got terribly lost and the 20 minute walk ended up taking me 45. I thought it would be nice to take a new route today, and I thought I was just taking a parallel street, but apparently I veered off at some point. Either way, once I finally stopped to ask an old man for directions he was impressed by how far out of the way I was and graciously walked with me to a spot from which he could give me directions. He told me about the significance of today’s holiday during our walk and complemented my Spanish skills…how delightfully refreshing it can be to bump into a kind stranger. He really wanted me to just get on the bus because we were so far away from where I was going, but with his help I eventually found Breanne and Shanti, who were waiting for me.
We walked across the river to a little coffee shop where Breanne and I proofread each other’s grammar compositions and reviewed some of the material from the last couple of weeks of classes. We all had lots of fun and walked home together for lunch, so luckily I didn’t get lost again. After lunch I settled in to work on my paper that is due for literature on Friday and then headed to the park near school for my prayer group meeting, which was fun. I took some time to sit, read my Bible and just be with God before the rest of the group got there, and it was really refreshing.
The blessing of a day off midweek to get some work done and connect with people has been a good reminder of God’s faithfulness…when I’m not strong He makes me stronger, and He always pulls me through the lowest lows and provides the joy in the best times. I want to keep thoughts like this in the front of my mind no matter what I’m going through, and I also need to remember His grace when I get behind and overwhelmed. What an amazing journey I’m on with Him…I couldn’t ask for a better whirlwind to be a part of.
