Sunday, October 9

Today was our final day in Madrid and the day of our return to Sevilla. We started it off a little later than we hoped and took the subway to the center of the city where we made our way to El Rostro, the famous Sunday market in Madrid. We had to ask for directions upon arriving in one of the main plazas of the city and were directed to the other plaza, where there was a market, but it wasn’t exactly what we were looking for. It was actually mostly a collection of old men who were all selling various antique coins, which was interesting, but not interesting enough to keep us contently there for very long.
Soon, I asked for a new set of directions and we were off to the artisan’s market, which was much more suitable to our tastes. There were tons and tons of people shopping at the multitude of wonderful shops, and we split up since we were all looking for something specific. Danielle and I shopped together and had a very successful few hours, finding some good bargains and thoroughly enjoying the people watching and looking at the cool stuff people had to sell.
I was amazed by how smoothly our time at the market went once we finally got there, and everyone showed up at our meeting point at almost the exact same time, which was great. We took the subway back to our hostel to check out and then made our way towards the Reina Sofia, another famous art museum in Madrid. Jenna and Corinne spent a couple of hours there while Danielle and I found a wonderful café to eat lunch in. We each got “a pinch” of tortilla Española, which is basically an omelet with potatoes in it, and a ham, cheese, and sunny-side-up egg sandwich. We again enjoyed talking with the people at the restaurant, and I was really glad we opted for a relaxed lunch over the museum, which I had already seen when I came here before.
The train station was a little difficult to navigate around, but we managed to find our train and meet the other girls with time to spare. We booked a set of four seats around a table for this trip, as that was the cheapest way to go, and we were thrilled with that set-up. We had plenty of space to read and work on homework on the way home, and we all lamented that there is no great public transportation system in the States like the ones we enjoy using here. Upon arriving in Sevilla after a very quick trip, we jumped on a bus that took us practically to our doorstep and parted ways. Corinne and I got started unpacking and sharing with Rosa about our day, and then I headed to the park for a while to unwind from the busy weekend. I was so worn out by the end of everything, but it was totally worth it, and I’m so glad we got to do everything we did this weekend.
