Well, it’s been kind of a mundane week, and I just noticed today that I have not been keeping up on my blog entry writing. At first, I was going to go back and write an entry for each day that I’ve missed, but I realized I would pretty much be writing the same thing for every day this week. So…I’ll just summarize them all into one post from today.
Today has been pretty much a normal day in the life of Spanish Casey J I had class, stayed after to ask questions about my upcoming tests, and then met with my group for my presentation tomorrow. I’m feeling pretty prepared for tomorrow, at least, so that’s encouraging. We had some awesome food for lunch, and Rosa taught me all about Spanish wedding traditions. No one was sure what the dish we had for lunch was called, but she got the recipe from her friend who ate it in Mexico and loved it…it was potatoes, vegetables and a tasty red sauce. She called it spicy potatoes, but it wasn’t spicy ;) oh well…we enjoyed it.
After a few hours of homework, I went to Encuentro, our Wednesday night worship/message service, and once again it was incredible. The message and worship are exactly what I need at this point every week, and it’s so good having that community and support as a part of my semester here. Today I was reminded of the profound grace that God pours out onto us every day, and how deep His love for us is. Corinne and I had a lovely chat about grace and how God teaches us even when we don’t understand what He’s doing before getting back to work on homework for the rest of the evening.
Yesterday and Monday were very similar days, including school, delightful meals, and lots of homework. I’ve been realizing that our apartment may not necessarily be the most productive place for me to do homework, so I’m currently on a mission to find a better place to study. Tomorrow I’ll try the school library (I’ve been staying here to avoid the extra 30 min walk to and from the school, but if I can get more done there it will be worth it), and I’m hoping I can get lots of studying done then for my tests on Friday.
A couple of sort of fun notes from this week are to be found in the simple things. Firstly, on Monday I was consumed by an overwhelming craving for banana bread. Where that craving came from, I do not know, but after taking a huge bite of a rotten peach I was bound and determined to find some banana bread. When I asked my literature professor where I could find some, he responded, “That must be a Costa Rica thing.” I’ve asked him about some of the sayings I learned in Costa Rica, so now every weird thing I do he just thinks is Costa Rican…it’s super funny. So I explained that banana bread is an American thing, and he still shrugged and told me I probably won’t find any in Sevilla.
He was right…I hadn’t seen any up to that point, so during my last class I was trying to brainstorm places to search. Starbucks. Yes…there are three Starbucks shops within a few blocks of my school, so after class I set out in search of my banana bread, and I struck gold at the very first Starbucks I tried. It just happened to be my favorite kind of banana bread (with nuts on the crust!), and I bought a white mocha to accompany it. It. Was. Heavenly. It totally made my day.
Until…I got home kind of late because we had a meeting about our service learning projects (I’m going to help tutor high school students in their English!), and when I walked in the door I was greeted by Rosa and a friend of hers who was visiting. He’s apparently an author who writes about the history of different cities he travels to. Well, he’s been to Cuba 9 times. Oh yeah…we had a super fun conversation. We only talked about Cuba a little bit, but it was really cool to hear him and Rosa talk about their friends from their college years and where life has taken them since then. They talked really fast, but I understood most of it, which was really gratifying.
So it turns out, looking back there was way more to write about Monday than I thought. Apparently Tuesday was the only day when nothing exciting happened. I did have a terrible dream on Monday night that stuck with me all day on Tuesday, so I didn’t really feel up for much excitement anyway, so maybe it was a blessing that nothing really happened. On Tuesday we had our intercambios (speaking partners) assigned, and I got paired with a university student. I tried to call her but got no response, so hopefully my message will be answered soon!
I’ve been staying really busy, and I’m pretty much exhausted, so that’s all for tonight…I’ll write with more details about my intercambio and service project once I learn more about them. Thanks for reading!
